The lack of sympathetic characters makes the story feel like a chore to play through. Minecraft: Story Mode is a generic mishmash of ideas. When compared to the combat sections of the episode, the building element falls flat. Worse still, these sections don't happen very often, so they feel like a tacked-on chore rather than an interesting facet of the game. In Minecraft: Story Mode, the structures you build are simply used to further the scene, which is a wasted opportunity for interesting gameplay. The Lego titles by TT Games, like the recent Lego Jurassic World ($16.95 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window), don't let you freely build whatever you like either, but they still incorporate building into puzzle solving and platforming. They feel like a slapdash way of including Minecraft building into the game. But for all intents and purposes, the building portions of Minecraft: Story Mode are just story scenes sped up as action montages.

During these sections, you need to complete a series of quick-time events to create whatever the story dictates at the time. Minecraft: Story Mode pays lip service to this by including building sections during key moments in the story. Minecraft's appeal lies in your ability to build and create whatever you want in the game word. These parts are engaging and quite fun, but they happen only a few times during the episode, and are over almost as soon as they start. You must time your attacks to hit them before they hit you, and shift your attention between enemies. Enemies slowly approach you and attack when they get close. A handful of story events pit you against the box-like monstrosities of the Minecraft world, like spiders, zombies, and skeletons. Minecraft: Story Mode adds combat to the mix to spice up the adventure. Action-heavy story sequences make use of quick-time events to keep the energy high and let you alter the scene slightly, though the consequences for failing these are minimal. In between event scenes, you trudge through small environments, while investigating highlighted points of interest until you come across the trigger for the next event. Minecraft: Story Mode employs all of Telltale Games' storytelling conventions. Scenes in Minecraft Story Mode are like watching a puppet show: they're entertaining, but are silly and inanimate at the same time. The voice actors all emote well, and the performance is solid all around, which makes the lack of an emotional connection all the more frustrating. It is certainly faithful to the original aesthetic, but the blocky models do a poor job of conveying any kind of emotion. Minecraft: Story Mode adopts a stylized version of this look, with everything from the environments to the character models designed around textured boxes. In Minecraft, the blocky aesthetic works fine because of the build-oriented, Lego-like gameplay. Minecraft: Story Mode's boxy art style also works against the narrative. Things sour very quickly, and a series of events and misunderstandings kick start the end of the world. The story starts with you, your friends Olivia and Axel, and your pig Reuben, setting out to win the building competition at a festival called EnderCon. There isn't any difference between protagonists aside from the vocal performance, so you can choose whichever block-person you like best. You get to choose your in-game avatar, with several male and female options to select from at the start. You play as Jesse, an awkward do-gooder who has hopes of meeting the four heroes of legend. I played Minecraft: Story Mode on PC, but it's also available on current- and last-generation consoles. Unfortunately, the game lacks the intensity of Telltale's previous games, settling instead for a generic, cartoony feel, rife with bland characters and a shoddy plot. Minecraft: Story Mode ($24.99) unites both game styles to create a grand adventure set within the Minecraft world. Telltale Games, on the other hand, is known for games featuring riveting drama and linear, point-and-click gameplay. The blocky visuals may not be particularly impressive, but Minecraft has a Lego-like charm that makes it very appealing. Minecraft has earned its claim to fame by offering a simplistic sandbox in which you can build and play. Story fails to create any tension or drama.Characters are shallow and unmemorable.
